L'homogénéisation concerne principalement la température [...], et la base de cette couche est marquée par une couche en général peu épaisse, dite thermocline, au sein de laquelle la température rejoint rapidement celle des couches plus profondes. [...] Dans le vocabulaire de la limnologie, la couche homogène localisée au-dessus de la thermocline est appelée l'épilimnion; la couche sous-jacente (relativement homogène elle aussi), l'hypolimnion.
